Because, nobody ever believes that. Everyone thinks that Beethoven had his string quartets completely in his head – they somehow formed in his head – and all he had to do was write them down, and they would kind of be manifest to the world. But what I think is so interesting, and what would really be a lesson that everybody should learn, is that things come out of nothing. Things evolve out of nothing. You know, that the tiniest seed in the right situation turns into the most beautiful forest. And then the most promising seed in the wrong situation turns into nothing. And I think this would be important for people to understand, because it gives people confidence in their own lives that that’s how things work.

If you walk around with the idea that there are some people who are so gifted – they have these wonderful things in their head but you’re not one of them, you’re just a normal sort of person, you could never do anything like that – then you live a different kind of life. You could have another kind of like, where you say, well, I know that things come from nothing very much and start from unpromising beginnings. And I’m an unpromising beginning, and I could start something.”
-Brian Eno, as quoted in Another Green World by Geeta Dayal (via, via)sashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11217694658840531263noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135429.post-90800410147226642732010-08-09T12:27:00.000-04:002010-08-09T12:48:37.800-04:00Hierarchy of Robot Needssashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11217694658840531263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135429.post-51263448015645975722010-07-28T23:27:00.000-04:002010-07-28T23:32:03.469-04:00Jane Austen's Fight Clubsashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11217694658840531263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135429.post-17952214911803300582010-07-23T11:27:00.000-04:002010-07-23T13:04:08.374-04:00Bike Cakesashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11217694658840531263noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5135429.post-35535574469511209682010-05-01T00:27:00.001-04:002010-05-01T00:45:58.629-04:00Archbishop Desmond Tutu on Arizona's new immigration lawQuote of the Month:

"Abominations such as Apartheid do not start with an entire population suddenly becoming inhumane. They start here. They start with generalizing unwanted characteristics across an entire segment of a population. All program staff located in Port-au-Prince, the capital, are accounted for. Although the communications infrastructure in Haïti has been disrupted, staff members were able to send a message via the U.S. embassy. All MCC staff members who have been in touch report seeing bodies in the streets, according to Daryl Yoder-Bontrager, MCC Latin America and the Caribbean director. MCC is working to contact staff outside Port-au-Prince.

MCC is planning its response which will include short-term relief plus recovery efforts over the medium and long term. Think of the Queen Mary — the whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there's a tiny thing at the edge of the rudder called a trim tab. It's a miniature rudder. Just moving the little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the little individual can be a trim tab. Society thinks it's going right by you, that it's left you altogether. But if you're doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole big ship of state is going to go. So I said, call me Trim Tab."

— R.
