Haïti: MCC responds

MCC is gearing up for a massive relief effort in Haïti and seeks to raise at least $1 million U.S. According to their press release:

"MCC workers in Haiti include nine people from Colombia, the Netherlands and the United States; seven Haitian program staff members; and additional support staff. All program staff located in Port-au-Prince, the capital, are accounted for. Although the communications infrastructure in Haïti has been disrupted, staff members were able to send a message via the U.S. embassy. All MCC staff members who have been in touch report seeing bodies in the streets, according to Daryl Yoder-Bontrager, MCC Latin America and the Caribbean director. MCC is working to contact staff outside Port-au-Prince.

MCC is planning its response which will include short-term relief plus recovery efforts over the medium and long term. "We're looking carefully at how we can build peace, avoid violence and do good community development at the same time," said Yoder-Bontrager.

MCC regional disaster management coordinators Kathy and Virgil Troyer, based in Honduras, will travel to Haïti as soon as possible to help with the planning and implementation of MCC's response. The Troyers are from Orrville, Ohio."

I've been reading this book. And while it's not exactly the point of the book, I've been wondering whether the correspondence between words that we use in English to describe concepts for social structure and French words for those same concepts means that our understanding of social relations becomes inevitably tied to ideas of liberal individualism arising out of the French Revolution, versus how one might think if speaking German. For example, people or peuple rather than volk (but consider gens); community or communauté rather than gemeinschaft. Are there counter-examples?
Obviously, this is all a subpart of the broader question of the extent to which cognition is dependent on language, but it would seem an important part of that question.
Based on my experience this morning, seriously why do I not drink more Virgin Marys?

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- With an instructor watching, an 8-year-old boy at a gun fair aimed an Uzi at a pumpkin and pulled the trigger as his dad reached for a camera. It was his first time shooting a fully automatic machine gun, and the recoil of the weapon was too much for him. He lost control and fatally shot himself in the head.

What's interesting to me is this quote from the boy's father, farther down in the article: "'This accident was truly a mystery to me,' said Bizilj, director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Conn. 'This is a horrible event, a horrible travesty, and I really don't know why it happened.'"

It's his use of the word "travesty" that I find fascinating. Obviously, he meant to use the word "tragedy" and to say that his son's death was very unfortunate. But by misspeaking and using the word "travesty," he's said that his son's death is a parody or mockery. That's fascinating to me as unintentional irony because, in my view, his son's death is a mockery of the supposed benefits of individual ownership of automatic firearms.

Also something in Spanish starting with "rojo," then another word starting with "c" that I can't remember. I usually post my race results on this blog, so i thought i should share that julia got second place for the girls at yesterday's halloween ally-cat! rock! Totally the icing on the cake (ok, the whole cake) to a totally rocking halloween! Other highlights include my "tonsil hockey" costume -- I put on my knee and elbow pad, attached a hockey stick to my bag and duct-taped a giant open mouth to my sweat shirt. I was surprised to find that some people had no idea what tonsil hockey was (julia). And also catching up with critical mass after work when it passed by the door and then rode with it until it's ended a few block from my house - it was by far the largest critcal mass i've taken part of yet. And, unlike last year, I was plenty sober to bike home!

it's 10:05 p.m., we've just finished playing a little katamari damacy with the drummer for our wedding thing. we've worked up a bit of an appetite, we down 2 ears of corn but we still need chocolate, dark. so i grab two hand fulls of change and rain jacket and head to the giant g. first thing i see is snak pak, grab them. then the bakery section. chocolate cake? to expensive. brownie? looks nasty. ah ha, the candy isle. organic dark chocolate, score! in the same isle as the candy is the cereal, i pace the isle looking for something on sale - nothing. some of the lights in the store shut off, it's closing time. i get a $4 box of cheerios. on the way to the register i see i cereal display, 2/$5! giant brand frosted mini wheats. nice. on to the self check out. scan the snack pack, scan the chocolate, scan the cereal, punch in my phone number. save $1, score. finish & pay. $5.20! i start tossing coins in, not making much headway with the pennies, i just toss in the silvery ones, i'm through with one pocket $2.35, on to the next. all i've got left is pennies and $.77 to go. returning an item at closing time would be embarrassing. i find a nickel left in my pocket and start tossing in the pennies. 10¢, 9¢, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2¢, 1¢ 0¢!!!! yess! i make it! all that's left are two pennies, 5 centavos from republic de guatemala and 10 won piece from south korea.

Because of that... I was exposed to this really awesome band, which hopefully you've all heard of... Mucca Pazza!

I just saw them again last night for their cd release party... seriously one of the best live shows I've ever been to... (which I can't stop saying). I was right up in the front in front of the saxes. It was amazing.

After the concert in Andersonville, I was serenaded to Happy Birthday on accordion... which was amazingly awesome.

One thing I also like about this band, is most of the members are very approachable and I've had fun talking with various musicians...

I had hoped to use CTA Bus Tracker in three ways. First, to figure out when the 60 is coming by so I can leave my office just in time to catch it. Second, to figure out when the 9 or 50 are going by so I can leave my house just in time to catch them. Third, to watch for fun, kind of like television for cats.

Only the final one has worked out. I always seem to have errands to run after work, and I haven't yet had cause to take the bus from home. What I really need to make CTA Bus Tracker work for me is some sort of portable device through which I can access the internet. So, here is where I turn to you: suggestions? K-S often feels able to justify our occasionally expensive dining habits by reminding herself that we don't buy gadgets like other people do, so it would have to be cheap. TimN, I particularly covet your thoughts on what would work with our wireless plan.

I am very excited about the new Bus Tracker expansion. If you had asked me to name my top three routes that I would like to see on Bus Tracker, I would have picked the 60, the 9 and the 21, and all of them are coming.

Also, Sarah S. of see-pee-tee fame is headed to Colombia soon, so I think next year's summer vacation should be a week in Bogota.

has anyone played with google maps lately??? ... yeah, that's what I got when I went looking for directions to the local Friends meeting in my area.... I can also see my apt too....
I cannot see my mom's house... nor Dam Straight back in Goshen... but still while this technology is sort of cool (I know what the building looks like, and the surrounding neighborhood)... there's some people who don't need to know what my apt looks like... (granted, they must have found my address somewhere.. so they could just as easily just go to my apt.)

I could definitely go for more cafes, local shops, small concerts and the like in my life...
