Oh wow Hallie, that's awesome! When exactly will you be around? Send me an email so we can plan for fun.

People who like Hallie's music can also check out Sarah Potenza. She's not really that much like Hallie, except that both of them make me feel like if only I put more effort in I could discover even more awesome people selling $5-$10 CDs and playing no-cover shows, and that way I could feel really cool. Anyway, Sarah plays at the Heartland every Tuesday and she's kind of bluesy.

Also, something I forgot to add to the list of awesome things from Thanksgiving is: the Illinois license plate reading "WILCO"!

Cultural Learnings of Ohio for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Chicagoland
So, highlights from Thanksgiving break:

• Obviously, seeing friends and family, though I will highlight hanging out in the hot tub at the Sauder Heritage Inn with K and Jules.
• Playing with other people's dogs.
• Listening to The Woods the entire way through. Every time I listen to that album I promise to show it proper respect in the future.
• A 2007 Saturn Ion from Enterprise. Why buy the milk when you can rent the car for free?
• A sign beside 117 east of Lima reading "CORN HOLE GAMES SOLD HERE." What does that even mean?

What would you have done?
This video of an attack on an Iranian-American student at UCLA disturbed me more than any video I've seen in years. I've certainly seen more graphic footage in that time, but nothing in such a familiar setting and with so many people standing around doing nothing:



The repeated tasering (5 times) suggests more than just an unruly student. The rent-a-cops can be heard saying "stand-up" over and over again when they could easily have carried the man out. This was about asserting control and domination. "Police said they shocked Tabatabainejad after he urged others to join his resistance and a crowd began to gather." The Washington Post reports.

Watching the video I felt a disturbing level of anger at the security guards and wondered what I would have done. After deciding that my initial reaction of wanting to punch the officers in the face wasn't practical or ethical, I decided the puppy pile would probably have been the best tactic in the situation.

Think about it. You never know when you'll be a bystander in a situation like this...

Wondered today if we could start a magazine called "Postmodern Bride." Walked to the office smiling at the idea of articles titled "Discursive Heurmentics of White for 2007!" and "Breaking the Hegemony: Which Cake is Best for You?" Unfortunately, I couldn't get much further, particularly in the area of cover photos. And more unfortunately, a Google search indicates that no one else has done my work for me as of yet.

Um, okay, that sucked. So, uh, I found $23.00 and a bus transfer in my suit pocket?

my first stills shoot (i was the best boy electric)
just got back from a day of shooting with Vogue! ok, so it was the italian vogue and not the US one, but it's still Vogue! skinny women and old men, yowza.

the last shoot was sweet.
the gaffer, "monkey", and me, "monkey jr", climbed up about 75 feet of shelved carpeting on sunday because we were bored while shooting in a warehouse that was supposed to be a detention center entrance! it was hella fun and then I realized usually when I'm up that high with a vertical drop I either have a staircase or a climbing rope. this time I just had good luck. as if the job doesn't have enough enherent danger, we had to create some for ourselves. tonight was the wrap prty of the shoot and I'm remembering all the awesomeness. fortunatly it's over now and I have a bit of the break. yay!

new colours, new features
Folks,

By leveraging the massive power of Google Reader I think I have found a way to make new posts on FOAS' pages show up in a new Shoup FOAS sidebar. Scroll down and to the right to see more. Basically, it is a meta feed made up of splicing in all the RSS feeds of our favourite blogs.

And, just like Shoup Pics, Shoup Radio and Shoup News it is participatory! You can manage the subscription list over at google.com/reader (name: shoup@mailinator.com, pass: shoup) or view the latest posts up at Shoup's Shared Items. The only trick is that items need to be read and "shared" for them to show up, so I'll try to do this and anybody else can do it too. So it might take a day or so to show up in the feed. BUT STILL. This is three types of awesome for people like me who aren't great about keeping in touch but still want to keep tabs on old friends.

I currently feel decent about it, but I still have 5 more pages to put info on... and unfortunately this has eaten my weekend so my jesus paper also due tomorrow has not been even started.

Oh.. I have weiss to thank. your post on Levy's book encouraged me to buy it.. .and then I turned it into my project. without you I'd be stuck writing a ten-page paper on some random topic rather than building this site.

Third Party 08: great idea, but uh, what's up with that gradient?
Meg, it'd be great if the idea got off the ground, but its hard to take it very seriously when the site looks more like '98 than '08. I don't like being judgmental, but why the choice of a rounded baby blue gradient tube thingy for the header and footer? And the over sized bright red and blue buttons with slightly off center white edges? I mean I'd love to see the website "serve as the casting call for a cast of possibly thousands of marginalized, radical, and subversive political figures out there," but that logo banner is about as extreme, alternative, marginalized, radical and subversive as Dick Clark.

american idol meets political revolution


a friend of a friend is trying to start a show called Third Party '08 that will be an

"American Idol" type reality show for Third Party and Independent Candidates for The President of The United States.

I think it's kind of a neat idea, especially because if it gets off the ground, it will at least make the public aware of our flawed dual-party system. And who knows, maybe it could lead to the election of the first non-white, non-male president! Anyway, if you're so inclined, you should register yourself on the site so that the potential producers know that this show would have an audience.
